Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday voiced strong disapproval of intermittent demands to divide the state into four, saying the potential of UP lies within its unity. In an exclusive interview to Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi at the Maha Kumbh Mela, Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh should maintain its identity and respect by staying united, also assuring that the state would soon attain the goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy.

“UP is UP in itself and this is its potential. I think UP should achieve its goals by staying united and I think that is its strength. That is its identity and its respect,” the Chief Minister said when asked about BSP chief Mayawati’s past statements that the state should be divided into four.

Asked about his stated goal of making Uttar Pradesh a $1-trillion economy, Yogi Adityanath said the timeline has been set for 2029.

“We have set a timeline of 2029. By 2029, UP will be a $1 trillion economy. An action plan has been made for that and it is being implemented. In the last seven to eight years, we have succeeded in more than doubling our economy despite the Covid-19 pandemic for about three years. I believe that we will achieve the $1 trillion dream by 2029,” he said.

Debate On ‘Reorganisation’ of UP

The demand for splitting Uttar Pradesh into Harit Pradesh (western UP), Poorvanchal (eastern UP), Bundelkhand and Awadh is raked up from time to time and come elections, it gains momentum.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), headed by Mayawati, was once a strong supporter of the demand when the Samajwadi Party was in power, maintaining that smaller states could be governed better.

As the chief minister, Mayawati had first raised the issue in 2007 and her government had even adopted a resolution in the state Assembly seeking its division in four parts. But as Mayawati lost power in 2012 after winning just 80 seats against 206 seats in 2007, her demand lost steam.
