In a disturbing piece of news, a 28-year-old teacher in Colorado, United States, has been convicted of having sex with a specially-abled student and exploiting him for cash. It also came to light that the teacher had asked the student to bring a gun to school in an attempt to shoot her colleague.

Imagine Kay Ewer began a twisted relationship with a 16-year-old special needs student and allegedly manipulated the boy by trying to convince him that he was “the one”, prosecutors told a court on January 31. The woman, a paraprofessional, had “frequent sexual encounters” with the boy for several weeks.

Ewer sent thousands of explicit texts to the student, referring to their sexual encounters, reported the New York Post. Some of the messages also showed her ordering the boy to bring a gun to the school and shoot a fellow teacher in the leg.

How Was This ‘Unhealthy’ Relationship Discovered?

Ewer also introduced the student to the deadly drug fentanyl, which is at the centre of America’s aggressive trade policy with China, Mexico and Canada. The DA Office’s investigation revealed that her unhealthy interest in the student was noticed almost immediately after she started working at the Brady Exploration School in August 2023.

In November that year, a teacher saw the boy hinting at an improper relationship with Ewer in a classroom assignment, after which school authorities contacted the Lakewood Police Department.

The police soon uncovered evidence of a disturbing sexual relationship between the two, including the explicit text messages and signs that drugs, guns and alcohol were involved, prosecutors said.

First Judicial District Attorney’s Office Special Victims Prosecutor Brynn Chase told the court that Ewer introduced the teenager to illegal and deadly drugs and asked him to bring a gun to their sexual encounters as well as to the school to “shoot another faculty member in the leg”.

What Will Happen To The Teacher?

Speaking at the hearing, the boy’s mother talked about Ewer’s “painful betrayal” of herself and her son, saying the teacher had “preyed on” her son and led him to believe that “she genuinely cared for him, all while exploiting him for money and manipulating him into thinking he was ‘the one’.”

Ewer was sentenced to four years in prison on January 31, after pleading guilty last November to sexual assault on a child and contributed to the delinquency of a minor – both felonies. In exchange for her guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed three other felony counts and one misdemeanour.

However, she also faces at least 10 years of sexual offender probation, which could turn into a life sentence factoring upon her success with a sex offender treatment programme.

The teacher apologised to her victim’s family in court as she stood before the judge, saying, “I’m really sorry; this will never happen again”, as per the DA’s Office.

This episode comes after a math teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student last year was caught after cops found scratch marks on the boy’s back, according to The Sun. Hailey Clifton-Carmack, 26, from Missouri, pleaded guilty to having sexual contact with her student.
