A seemingly ordinary government residence in Dehradun’s Yamuna Colony has become a source of local intrigue, with whispers of a ministerial curse circulating among Uttarakhand’s political circles.

Residence R-2, home to state government ministers, has gained notoriety for an unusual pattern: no minister who has resided there has managed to complete their full term in office.

The latest casualty of this supposed curse is Premchand Agarwal, who was recently asked to resign. Agarwal, who spent a significant portion of his time at R-2, was relieved of his ministerial duties before completing three years of his tenure. His departure on Wednesday, following his resignation on Sunday, has reignited discussions about the residence’s peculiar history.

The alleged curse dates back to the state’s formation. In 2002, Cabinet Minister Shoorveer Singh Sajwan, then Irrigation Minister, was assigned R-2. Sajwan’s tenure was cut short due to controversies, forcing him to resign.

In 2012, Minister Harak Singh Rawat was allocated the infamous residence, only to rebel and resign from his post in 2016. His second stint as minister in 2017, when he was once again assigned R-2, met a similar fate.

Adding fuel to the myth, Premchand Aggarwal, appointed minister in the Dhami government in 2022, became the latest in a string of ministers who failed to complete their terms after residing in R-2.
