Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes Jofra Archer should not be included in the squad for the second Test against India at Edgbaston next week. He suggests that Archer needs to play more red-ball cricket for Sussex before being considered for the third Test at Lord’s, starting on July 10.
During the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against India, which England won by five wickets at Headingley, Archer played for Sussex in a County Championship game against Durham at Chester-le-Street. This match marked his first first-class appearance since 2021, where he recorded figures of 1-32 in 18 overs.
Vaughan was quoted as saying in a video posted by the BBC on Wednesday, “No. He’s had four years out of action, I don’t see what the great rush is. Just give him a couple of games for Sussex and then bring him in for the game at Lord’s. I would continue with the attack that bowled so well here at Leeds this week.”

With England leading 1-0 in the five-match series, the squad for the second Test at Edgbaston, starting on July 2, has yet to be announced. England captain Ben Stokes commented on Archer’s return to red-ball cricket, saying, “It’s always great seeing Jofra out there, playing for England, playing for Sussex. It’s obviously been a very long time for him, and watching him get that red ball back in his hand is very exciting.”
Archer’s potential return to Test cricket boosts England’s bowling options, especially considering their injury woes during the ongoing series against India. His comeback also strengthens the team for the upcoming five-match Ashes series in Australia later this year.

Bumrah To Rest: Gambhir
India will continue to prioritise Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness and adhere to their plan of playing the pace spearhead in only three out of the five Tests against England, head coach Gautam Gambhir stated.
Bumrah, who declined the test captaincy to manage his workload after four months out with a back issue, was India’s top bowler with 5-83 in the first innings of the Headingley match but went wicketless in the second.
The 31-year-old’s expected absence in two of the remaining four tests could result in India fielding an inexperienced attack against the hosts’ aggressive batters, but Gambhir remains focused on the long-term picture.
“For us to manage Bumrah’s workload is more important,” he told reporters. “There’s a lot of cricket going forward and we know what he brings to the table.
“Before he came on this tour it was already decided that he’s going to play three Tests, but let’s see how his body turns up. We haven’t decided which other Tests he’s going to play.”
England will face India in the second Test at Edgbaston on July 2.
