Venom 3 stays strong at the box office for third week in a row but new holiday film emerges to challenge it

Venom 3: The Last Dance held on to the box office crown for the third week in a row, but got some competition from a variety of newcomers, including a new Christmas film.

The third and final installment in the Tom Hardy–led comic book trilogy pulled in  $16.2 million over the weekend, but revenues were down 37 percent from the week before.

Overall, the action adventure starring the Hollywood hunk has been a big winner for Sony, grabbing more than $394 million globally. 

Entering the contest in second place was The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

The season of love becomes a little more tense when a family of unruly kids decide they want to take all the parts in the annual celebration heralding the birth of Jesus. 

The film — produced by the Kingdom Story Company, which was behind the popular Christian series The Chosen — benefited from word-of-mouth advertisement. It was distributed by Lionsgate.

‘I just think it’s something that literally everyone can see. You can go to the theater with your blood family, your chosen family, and I hope it’s something that people watch every year and it becomes a Christmas tradition,’ Greer told the Detroit News in her home state of Michigan.  

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever received an 89-percent rating from critics surveyed by Rotten Tomatoes, and it unwrapped $11.1 million its first weekend at the box office.

The movie opened in more than 3200 theaters across the US for a healthy opening weekend of $11 million and third place.

The Wild Robot continued to attract audiences but did not fill as many seats as usual after seven weeks in theaters.

The animated adventure — featuring the voice of Lupita Nyong’o as the title character — dropped to fourth place with a weekend take of $6.65 million. 

Smile 2 kept grinning all the way to the bank.

The thriller starring Naomi Scott as a pop star haunted by a terrifying entity landed in fifth place, earning $5 million.  So far, the global take on the spooky thriller is more than $123 million. 

Conclave continues to stir up audiences as it battles for moviegoers. The conspiracy thriller starring Stanley Tucci and Ralph Fiennes as Catholic cardinals looking to elect a new pope dropped to sixth place with a take of $4.1 million.

Seventh place went to Anora. Mikey Madison stars as a young sex worker who impetuously marries the son of a Russian oligarch, though her new in-laws are less than thrilled about the elopement

The romantic dramedy saw its audience size and earning increase once it was released in more theaters, collecting some $2.45 million over the weekend.

Not far behind were Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in Here. The multigenerational story set in one location was not well received by critics or audiences. After debuting in fifth place, the drama fell to eighth, earning only $2.426 million.
