Roha, a historic town nestled in the Kutch district of Gujarat, India, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Steeped in history, the town is renowned for its rich history and architectural wonders of India. Among them is Roha Fort, a formidable structure perched 800 feet atop Roha Hill that stands as a testament to the region’s bygone era. Also known as Roha Sumari Fort, it is one of the historical forts of Kutch and among the most popular tourist destinations in Mandvi. Whether you’re a history buff, an adventure enthusiast, or simply looking for a quiet retreat, Roha offers something for everyone.
Coming to its history, the fort was built during the 1550 CE when the ruler of Kutch, Khengarji Jadeja I, established the town of Roha in Nakhatrana province about 50 kms from Bhuj and gave it to his brother Sahebji. Covering an area of 16 acres, there were about 52 villages under this fort at that time.
The place got the name Sumari Roha after a tragic tale of valour and sacrifice. In the 13th century, when Allauddin Khilji invaded the region, 120 Rajput princesses from the Soomra dynasty sought refuge in the Roha Fort. Rather than surrendering to the invaders, they chose to take Samadhi, a self-immolation ritual, to preserve their honour.
Later, it was his successor and grandson Thakore Noganji who built the fort with baked bricks and stones in the 18th century. The fort complex is replete with a temple, living palaces for the king and his queens, and even a separate jailhouse was made for those violating the law in the jagir. Its imposing walls, intricate carvings, and strategic location make it a captivating sight.
Over the years, the fort witnessed the rise and fall of dynasties and played a crucial role in the region’s history. The British took control over the fort during the early 18th century and made several changes, including two deep wells within the fort. Later, most of the parts of the fort were destroyed by earthquakes and lack of proper management.
Beyond its historical significance, Roha is known for its serene and picturesque setting. The surrounding landscapes, dotted with hills, temples, stepwells, valleys, and ancient ruins, invite visitors to delve deeper into the region’s rich cultural heritage. The fort also has Radhakrishna Temple and Mataji Temple. As the place is close to nature, visitors can spot many peacocks and other birds even now.
Another noteworthy thing about this place is that the famous poet of Gujarat, Kalapi, spent a lot of time at Roha Hill, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and penning some of the most romantic poems.
