UFC fighter Conor McGregor came close to scoring a worldie as he swapped the octagon for a football pitch on Sunday. The Irish fighter elated fans on January 12 by lining up for a team named after The Black Forge pub that he owns. McGregor put his physical abilities to good use, sporting the number 11 shirt in the match. The Irishman even came close to sniping a goal as he lobbed a half-volley effort onto the top of the crossbar from 30 yards out.
A clip of McGregor’s effort was shared by a MMA fan page on X (formerly Twitter). “Conor McGregor almost sniped one from about 30 yards out today on the football pitch,” the post read.
McGregor put his physical abilities to good use during the weekend football game. At one point, the UFC fighter was seen lunging into a tackle studs first after losing the ball. He even booted an opponent in the stomach while attempting to connect with a volley in the penalty box. The Irishman also performed a couple of aggressive shoulder tackles in the match.
Happy Punch later shared a clip of McGregor’s antics on X and wrote, “Conor McGregor using MMA while playing football today.”
While McGregor was deeply involved in the weekend game, his side ultimately had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
After the match, McGregor shared his experience in a post on X. “Good game, fair challenges, nothing sloppy, no injuries. Up the Forge!” he wrote.
McGregor continues to take a break from life inside the Octagon but the MMA star has been keeping himself busy. He has also expressed his love for football multiple times in the past with allegiance to multiple teams like Manchester United and Liverpool.
Former UFC middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen recently claimed that he was doubtful about McGregor making a UFC return. Speaking on The Good Guy/Bad Guy Podcast, he said, “No, I’m not going to be foolish enough to believe that we can get that fight [between McGregor and Chandler] to the ring for Chandler or for anybody else for Conor sadly. The sport is more fun when Conor’s around, but no, we can’t get him in the ring.”
Speaking further, Sonnen added, “Zero [per cent chance], Conor will not fight again. When Conor pulled out of the fight with Chandler, it was akin to saying, ‘I’m retired.’ Whether he knows it or not, his career ended at that moment.”
UFC chairman Dana White had previously suggested that Conor McGregor could return to the Octagon in 2025. Sonnen’s claims, however, have once again cast doubts over the Irishman’s future with the company.
