IPL 2025: MS Dhoni hit a helicopter shot off Matheesha Pathirana (CSK)
MS Dhoni has his eyes set on the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), with many assuming it to be his last season in the franchise competition. The Chennai Super Kings legend has already joined the pre-season camp to begin his preparation for the upcoming campaign. During a recent training session at Chepuak, CSK also held an intra-squad match where Dhoni pulled off his iconic helicopter shot off Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan pacer attempted a toe-crushing yorker but was unable to trouble Dhoni.
The former India captain perfectly judged the length and executed his trademark shot to dispatch the ball into the stands for a straight six. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was at the non-striker’s end, appeared to be stunned after seeing 43-year-old Dhoni in a devastating mood. Pathirana also responded with a cheeky smile as he saw the ball travelling over the umpire’s head.
When it comes to “Thala” Dhoni, age is just a number. Even after five years of his international retirement, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter continues to impress with his fitness and big-hitting prowess.

According to his former teammate Harbhajan Singh, Dhoni aims to make a strong statement in IPL 2025. He has worked hard to remain fit despite staying away from cricket for nearly ten months.
“I just met him recently at one of our friend’s daughter’s weddings. He looked very fit, and solid. I asked him, ‘What you are doing at this age, isn’t it tough?’ He said, ‘Yes, it’s difficult, but this is the only thing I like doing. I find joy in it. I want to do it, go out and play.’ As long as the hunger is there, you will be able to do it,” Harbhajan said about Dhoni in a recent interview with ESPN Cricinfo.
“It’s hard without playing any cricket (throughout the year). He is showing how it’s done. He must be doing something better than the others. He is not just surviving, he is dominating all the bowlers,” he explained.
Harbhajan further revealed that Dhoni had been practising for the IPL over the last two to three months. “He bats 2-3 hours every day in Chennai. He is the first one to come to the ground and the last one to leave, even at this age. That’s the difference,” he added.
Chennai Super Kings, under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, will open their IPL 2025 campaign with a high-voltage clash against Mumbai Indians on March 23.
