Things got quite heated during the IPL 2025 match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Lucknow on Monday. LSG bowler Digvesh Rathi and SRH opener Abhishek Sharma had a heated argument, big enough for the umpires to be forced to separate them.

It happened during the eighth over of the second innings. With SRH chasing a huge 206, Abhishek was leading the charge with a brilliant 59 (19). However, on the third ball of the over, Rathi trapped him with a well-disguised googly wide outside off. The left-hander went for the lofted hit over the off-side but mis-timed it as it came off the outside half of his bat, going straight up in the air for an easy catch.

Rathi, who has earned a name for his on-the-face celebrations, was more pumped up than usual and gave a big send-off. Abhishek initially seemed to be walking off, but the celebration riled him up and he turned around to have a go at the bowler. Digvesh didn’t step back either and said a few words too.

The on-field umpires did well to step-in — the players followed too — because it looked like it might turn ugly.

Both hot-heated players, one from Delhi and the other from Punjab, have now risked getting a reprimand from the BCCI. Rathi has already collected a few demerit points from the board for his notebook celebration. A few more might lead to a one-match ban — just like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)’s Harshit Rana served last year.

Although some reports suggested that the BCCI had asked umpires to be a bit lenient with these celebrations — which explains why Rathi could keep doing it by tweaking it a bit — this argument could land him in big trouble. Otherwise, he has been one of the most impressive bowlers this season.

Even in this match, he also took out Ishan Kishan in the 12th over, forcing a mistake off the left-hander who went for a reverse sweep.
