Bromance? Friendly fire? Or something else? Well, the internet seems divided as a clip of Kuldeep Yadav slapping Rinku Singh twice following Delhi Capitals’ defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday has gone viral on social media. The incident happened soon after defending champions KKR managed to keep their playoffs hopes alive with a narrow 14-run win at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Rinku was having a laugh when Kuldeep, purportedly annoyed at something, slapped his former KKR teammate out of nowhere leaving the star batter stunned. After having a few words, Kuldeep again slapped Rinku and this time the cricketer appeared furious.
The incident was a stark reminder of IPL’s infamous ‘slapgate’ scandal of inaugural season when Mumbai Indians’ spinner Harbhajan Singh slapped Kings XI Punjab’s (now Punjab Kings) fast bowler S Sreesanth with the visuals of the latter breaking down into tears leaving viewers shocked.
The BCCI took exception to the incident and banned Harbhajan for 11 matches with the legendary spinner later admitting it was wrong on his part to have slapped the former India fast bowler.
Fans on social media though are divided over Kuldeep‘s actions with few terming it as ‘bromance’ while others demanding BCCI to ban the India spinner.
Rinku played a key role in ensuring KKR lived to fight another day after hitting 36 off 25 as the three-time champions posted a match-winning total of 204/9. Angkrish Raghuvanshi was the top-scorer of KKR innings with a fine 32-ball 44.
However, Kuldeep had an off day, bowling three wicketless overs while conceding 27 runs in them. Later, DC, despite a half-century from Faf du Plessis – 62 off 45 – and a quickfire 23-ball 43 from skipper Axar Patel, fell short of the target while managing 190/9 in 20 overs.
It was DC’s fourth defeat of the season and has seen them slip to the fourth spot in the IPL points table now. On the other hand, KKR are steady at the seventh spot.
