Argentina defeated Peru 1-0 in their South America World Cup qualifier match on Tuesday thanks to a stunning volley from Lautaro Martinez in the second half. Lionel Messi played a vital role as he provided the cross into the penalty area following which Martinez leapt into air and fired a left-footed volley past Peru’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.
Argentina, the current world champions, have now won eight of their 12 matches of the qualifying round. With 25 points, they currently lead the table – five points ahead of Uruguay.
However, it was a far from ideal performance from Argentina as they struggled to create chances. However, in the 55th minute, Messi delivered a cross from the left which Martinez capitalised in a stunning fashion.
Messi Inches Closer To Another Record
The assist was Messi’s 58th of international career which has now brought him on level terms with Landon Donovan’s all-time international men’s record. Messi though will have to wait for a few months before he can claim the record for himself as Argentina are next schedule to face Urugay and Brazil in March next year as part of their world cup qualifiers.
On the other hand, it was Martinez’s 32nd goal for Argentina and thus equaling the tally of the legendary Diego Maradona.
Uruguay, Brazil Play Out A Draw
Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Uruguay at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador. Valverde put Uruguay ahead in the 55th minute after a goalless first half. However, seven minutes later, Gerson pulled one back to make it 1-1.
Brazil are fifth in the CONMEBOL standings having collected 18 points while Uruguay are second with 20 points followed by Colombia and Ecuador. The result left the Brazil fans frustrated as they started booing towards the end of the clash.
