Glenn Phillips showcased his fielding prowess as his catch saw Pakistan lose their skipper, Mohammad Rizwan in the opening game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 that was held in Karachi on Wednesday evening.
Phillips, who was stood at the square-leg region took a one-handed catch with his left hand to get rid of Pakistan’s skipper. Rizwan looked to hammer the shorter delivery by William O’Rourke but the fielder’s stunning take saw the home fans being stunned.
The 28-year-old remains one of the finest fielders in the modern-day game and this catch shows why he can be a game-changer as an outfielder as well. His catch also puts Pakistan at risk of suffering a defeat on home soil in the opening game of the tournament.
Earlier, Phillips put on a show with the bat as he helped New Zealand up the scoring rate with his quickfire 61 off 39 balls as the Kiwis finished with a target of 321 set for Pakistan in the second innings.
Prior to Phillips’ contributions, Will Young scored a fine century (107) at the top of the order while Tom Latham (118) anchored the innings till the final delivery to help the away team get a decent score on the board.
Phillips has also shown his class with the ball as he came in at a crucial juncture in the second innings where he bowled four overs so far giving away just 18 runs in the process, thus adding pressure to Pakistan in their mammoth run-chase.
The all-rounder has been in fine form of late. He had a stellar performance in the recently concluded ODI tri-series where he scored 154 runs in three games without being dismissed and at a strike-rate of 125.2.
The Kiwis will hope that the star all-rounder continues firing on all cylinders as the BlackCaps hope to go all the way in the ongoing ICC tournament. They have been placed in Group A where they take on Bangladesh and India in their remaining group-stage matches.
Pakistan are struggling in the run chase as their top order failed to deliver. Babar Azam is coming close to a fifty but the rising scoring rate could prove to be a problem for the hosts.
