After dropping two key catches in the first innings of the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), Gujarat Titans (GT)’s wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis’ IPL debut got more embarrassing in the second half as he got out hit-wicket against left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner.

It happened on the second ball of the seventh over. Mendis was looking good at 20 (9), having hit two sixes and a four already. Santner bowled a good length ball outside off, Mendis looked to crouch and go back to pull it to the leg-side. He connected the ball off his pads, but soon, the footage showed his bails dislodged.

It wasn’t a stumping as replays showed that Mendis had stretched his back leg a bit too much to hit the base of his stumps. It almost summed up his day. Watch it here:

Mendis became the 18th batter to get hit-wicket in the IPL, in its 18th season. Earlier, former MI and current Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) all-rounder Krunal Pandya had gotten out hit-wicket, too.

In the first innings, he dropped MI’s two of the most imporant batters — Rohit Sharma in the third over and Suryakumar Yadav in the 12th over. Both his drops and the dismissal can be attributed, at least in part, to his probable rustiness as Jos Buttler’s mid-season, last-minute replacement in the Titans’ squad. He hadn’t had much match practice behind him.

GT would hope that the unlucky wicket wouldn’t be a match-defining moment in their chase of 229.
