US President Donald Trump on Friday yet again iterated his mediation efforts between India and Pakistan, saying that he was the one who settled the soaring tensions through trade.
While addressing a press conference along with Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk, who was demitting the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) office, Trump said that he averted the nuclear disaster.
He further thanked the leadership of New Delhi and Islamabad for agreeing to the ceasefire.
“We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned out into a nuclear disaster, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan, and I want to thank my people. Also, we talk trade, and we say we can’t trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons. They’re great leaders in those countries, and they understood and they agreed, and that all stopped, and we’re stopping others from fighting. Also, because ultimately we can fight better than anybody, we have the greatest military in the world. We have the greatest leaders in the world…” Trump said.

Donald Trump time and again asserted that he had “settled” the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, attributing the resolution to his efforts in pursuing trade agreements with both nations.
The US President has consistently maintained that he played a pivotal role in de-escalating the conflict between India and Pakistan.
Immediately after the ceasefire between India and Pakistan last week, Trump had claimed he mediated between the two nations. Posting on Truth Social, Trump had said, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
He had also portrayed the ceasefire as a major diplomatic success, stating that he had prevented a potential nuclear war and even envisioned the leaders of India and Pakistan dining together in peace.
However, India has stated that the recent ceasefire with Pakistan was a bilateral agreement, worked out directly between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries. India has consistently denied any third-party mediation emphasising that the decision to halt military actions was a result of direct communication between New Delhi and Islamabad and not linked to any trade discussions.
Earlier government sources told CNN-News18 that there was no reference to trade in talks between top leaders of India and the US during the India-Pakistan military conflict. Notably, US Vice President JD Vance spoke to PM Modi on May 9, where trade was not discussed.
