Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has expressed his excitement for Salford City’s upcoming FA Cup clash against Manchester City. The ex-midfielder was appointed Salford City sporting director in March 2024. He had barely spoken about his new role since taking up the job. Nearly a year later, Giggs has broken his silence ahead of his side’s mouthwatering clash against Pep Guardiola’s men on January 11. Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Giggs said, “I think when the draw was made, it was brilliant for the club. We’re facing such a big club and what City have done in the last few years, and for the players playing at a Premier League stadium, it’s exciting.”

Ryan Giggs has owned Salford City since March 2014 alongside his fellow Class of 92 members including Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, David Beckham and Phil Neville. In that time, the Welshman has helped the Ammies rise from the Northern Premier League Division One North into the EFL. In his role as the club’s sporting director, Giggs has helped Salford mount a promotion push this season. The Karl Robinson-coached side currently sits in third place in League Two.

In the same interview, Ryan Giggs explained how Salford City couldn’t have been in better form ahead of their FA Cup fixture on Saturday. “And I think when you sort of park it, concentrate on the league, which we’ve done well. We’re going into the game in good form and third in the table. We couldn’t be going into the game in better form really,” he said.

Ryan Giggs opined that Karl Robinson deserved all the credit for Salford City’s brilliant league run so far. “I think credit to Karl, Karl’s handled the situation brilliantly,” the Manchester United legend said. “I think he recognised, Karl’s had the experience of playing big teams in his career and he’s made sure that it’s exciting, great to look forward to, but first and foremost to concentrate on our league form and Karl and the players have done that brilliantly,” Giggs added.

Manchester City and Salford City will lock horns at the Etihad this weekend. The Ammies will be heading into the fixture brimming in form after securing consecutive wins in their last six matches across competitions. The reigning Premier League champions, whereas, recently ended their five-match winless run against Leicester City and won 2-0.
