India’s inability to play spin bowling was badly exposed during the New Zealand Test series, which they lost 0-3. As the Rohit Sharma-led side gears up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under, what if the Australians welcome India with turning pitches instead of the traditional spicy tracks? Head coach Gautam Gambhir believes that the pitch doesn’t matter when the team is ready, rather ‘hungry’, to win in foreign conditions.

Addressing a press conference before boarding the flight to Australia, Gambhir said the pitch is a factor that is beyond the team’s control. He added that Team India has all bases covered and can play in any kind of conditions.

“We don’t control the wickets, what they give is their wish, whatever they want to dish, dish us with and we are absolutely ready to play on any kind of conditions and we have got all the bases covered,” Gambhir told media.

“So, what difference does it make whether they give us a turning track, bouncy tracks, green wickets? I think we got to still go out there and do the job and play to our potential and play our best cricket. And if we all know that if we play to our potential and if we play our best cricket, we can defeat anyone,” he added.

The Indian head coach also stated that the Indian team is not thinking about qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final and instead is more focused on doing well in the five-match Test series against Australia.

“Honestly, we are not looking at what’s going to happen in the World Test Championship, whether we are going to qualify or not. Every series is important. When you play for your country, when you represent your country, every series is important, irrespective of what has happened in the past,” he said.

“For us, I think it is two good teams playing against each other. We are absolutely keen to go out there and perform and try to win the series,” Gambhir added.
