Union Home Minister and BJP’s key poll strategist Amit Shah on Friday strongly indicated that outgoing Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai may soon take on a role in the party’s national leadership structure.

Shah also praised Annamalai for his role in strengthening the BJP’s grassroots presence in Tamil Nadu during his time as the state president.

“As the President of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit, Shri K Annamalai Ji has made commendable accomplishments. Whether it is carrying the policies of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji to people or the programs of the party from village to village, Annamalai Ji’s contribution has been unprecedented,” Shah wrote in an X post.

Amit Shah added that the BJP would make use of Annamalai’s organisational abilities at the national level, indicating his potential inclusion in the party’s central leadership.

The Union Home Minister also confirmed that Nainar Nagendran, the MLA from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, was the only one to file his nomination for Tamil Nadu’s BJP President role.

With these developments, Nagendran has assumed the party’s top organisational role in Tamil Nadu, though an official confirmation is still awaited.

BJP-DMK Alliance Sealed

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced that AIADMK and BJP will contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections together as part of the NDA alliance.

BJP’s Annamalai, AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), and several other NDA leaders were present alongside Amit Shah during the key press briefing.

“These elections will be contested under the leadership of PM Modi on a national level and under the leadership of AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami on the state level,” said Shah.

Shah recalled the previous state and national elections fought by BJP and AIADMK together under the NDA alliance. He pointed out that AIADMK has been a key part of the NDA since 1998 and that PM Modi and former CM J Jayalalithaa had also worked together in the past.
