WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging platform, has intensified its efforts to combat rising fraud and scams in India while ensuring platform integrity. In its latest India monthly report, the company revealed that it banned approximately 99 lakh Indian accounts between January 1 and January 30, 2025. WhatsApp also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing further bans on users who violate its policies and guidelines.

According to the report, WhatsApp banned these accounts for violating specific criteria under Rule (1)(d) and Rule 3A (7) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021.

The platform employs automated tools and user feedback to identify and remove accounts that breach its terms of service. Key reasons for these bans include spam, misinformation, fraudulent activities, and aggressive behaviour.

WhatsApp reported blocking precisely 99,67,000 Indian accounts in January 2025. Notably, 13,27,000 of these were proactively banned before receiving any user reports, leveraging advanced detection technologies that analyze behavioural patterns indicative of fraud or abuse.

Additionally, WhatsApp addressed several user complaints during this period. The platform received 9,474 grievance reports, out of which 239 cases led to account bans or corrective actions, including responses via email and postal mail through its India Grievance Officer.This significant step from the social media giant highlights WhatsApp’s commitment to creating a safer digital environment for all Indian users.

According to WhatsApp’s monthly report, abuse detection on the app occurs in three stages of an account’s life cycle. “Abuse detection occurs at three stages in an account’s life cycle: during registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback in the form of user reports and blocks. A team of analysts augments these systems to evaluate edge cases and help improve our effectiveness over time,” the company said.

How to protect your account from getting banned from WhatsApp?

To avoid account bans, WhatsApp recommends users not send bulk messages, spam, or violate the platform’s terms of service. Users have also been advised to report any spam calls or messages immediately to help the company create a safer digital environment for all.
