WhatsApp wants to make it easier for Instagram users to link their accounts to the platform and this feature will make it happen.
WhatsApp is testing the new feature with its internal team
WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature for its iOS app that will link it to another platform. This exciting addition aims to bridge the gap between social media profiles WhatsApp and Instagram, allowing users to seamlessly share their Instagram profiles within their WhatsApp accounts. According to a known tipster, the feature has been spotted in the latest beta version of the iOS app, however, it is currently under development, and beta testers will not be able to try it out.
WABetaInfo, in its report, mentioned that the instant messaging platform is working on the feature where users will be able to add their Instagram profile links on WhatsApp, allowing their contacts to easily connect with them. The update was spotted on WhatsApp for iOS beta app version 25.2.10.72, which is available through the TestFlight beta programme.
Screenshots shared by a feature tracker reveal that a new option has been added to the Links section within the user profile interface. With the new option dubbed “Add Links,” users can simply add their Instagram usernames by tapping a plus icon.
The report also claimed that the feature currently does not ask WhatsApp users to authenticate the profile they’re adding. This raises the possibility of users falsely claiming other people’s Instagram handles, potentially leading to identity theft and privacy-related violations. To address these concerns, WhatsApp is expected to implement a layer of authentication before rolling out the feature officially. This could involve verifying usernames through direct integration with Instagram or requiring users to manually log in to their Instagram accounts within the WhatsApp app.
Notably, this feature is completely optional, which means that iOS users who do not wish to display their social media profiles on WhatsApp will have the choice to not add their Instagram profiles. While the feature is currently limited to Instagram links, there are chances that WhatsApp will expand it to allow users to include other Meta accounts such as Facebook and Threads.
There is no official announcement about whether the company will allow adding profile links to third-party social media platforms such as X (previously Twitter) or Snapchat.
It is worth noting that a similar feature is available for businesses on WhatsApp, but the difference is when a business wants to add a social media profile to its WhatsApp account, it must go through an authentication process which won’t be needed for the normal accounts.
