WhatsApp is stepping up its commitment to user privacy and security with a new feature aimed at making chat histories even more secure. As part of its continued efforts to enhance privacy protections, the platform is developing advanced settings to give users greater control over their conversations.
According to findings from the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, the app is working on a privacy-focused setting that’s likely to roll out in an upcoming update. This new option will add an extra layer of protection by preventing media files—like images and videos—from being automatically saved to the recipient’s gallery. Currently, this restriction applies only to chats with disappearing messages. However, WhatsApp is now extending the feature to regular chats for users who opt-in, allowing for more discretion and control over shared content.
Beyond restricting media downloads, this advanced chat privacy feature will also prevent the export of entire chat histories. Once enabled, WhatsApp will block the ability to export conversations that include messages from users who have activated this setting. The move is designed to protect personal exchanges and reduce the risk of unauthorised data sharing. While users will still be able to forward individual messages if needed, restricting full chat exports ensures that private conversations stay more secure and controlled.
Another notable aspect of this feature is its effect on Meta AI interactions. If a user enables advanced chat privacy, both they and other participants in the conversation will be restricted from engaging with Meta AI within that chat. This update highlights WhatsApp’s continued commitment to giving users greater control over their data and digital interactions.
Since the feature is still under development, WhatsApp may roll out additional functionalities before its official launch. Once released, it will remain completely optional—giving users the choice to enable enhanced privacy protections based on their preferences.
