Who is Kush Desai? Trump Taps Ex-Indian-American Journalist As Deputy Press Secretary

Desai brings a wealth of experience to Trump’s communications office, having served as Deputy Battleground States and Pennsylvania Communications Director at the Republican National Committee.

US President Donald Trump appointed Indian-American Journalist Kush Desai as the Deputy Press Secretary in the White House, Desai and Anna Kelly will join the administration as deputy press secretaries for the work for the Republican Party.

Desai is among the three new Indian-American appointments in the Trump administration – Ricky Gill as the senior director, South and Central Asia, National Security Council (NSC), and Saurabh Sharma, who will join the Presidential personnel office to focus on staffing and appointments.

Reacting to his appointment, Kash Patel took to X and said, “I’m back, back in the DC groove.”

Who Is Kush Desai?

Kush Desai is a Dartmouth College graduate, who also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ivy League institution in Hanover, New Hampshire. He is bilingual, fluent in both English and his native language Gujarati. Desai has also earned the prestigious James O. Freedman Presidential Research Scholarship, which allows students to gain first-hand research experience at Dartmouth.

Before coming to politics, Desai briefly worked as a journalist at The Daily Caller in Washington DC and served as a research analyst at the RNC, as per his LinkedIn page, after which he was promoted to Director of Vetting.

Desai brings a wealth of experience to Trump’s communications department, having served as Deputy Battleground States and Pennsylvania Communications Director at the Republican National Committee (RNC)

He also previously served as Deputy Communications Director for the 2024 Republican National Convention and Communications Director for the Republican Party of Iowa. Desai also held the same position of Deputy Battleground States and Pennsylvania Communications Directors at the RNC.

As such, Desai’s work helped shape the narratives and messages in key battleground states, including Pennsylvania, which Trump wrested back from the Democrats during last year’s election. In his new role, Desai will work under the White House Office of Communications, overseen by Deputy White House Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich.

This announcement follows President Trump’s earlier appointments of Steven Cheung as assistant to the President and White House communications director, and Karoline Leavitt as assistant to the President and press secretary.
