Bangladeshi police arrested actress Meher Afroz Shaon on charges of treason after she criticised the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Her family’s house in Jamalpur was burned down a few hours prior. Shaon and her family have ties with the Awami League.
Additional Police Commissioner of the Detective Branch, Rezaul Karim Malik, told the Dhaka Tribune that “she was detained in Dhanmondi on Thursday night.” Police said Shaon has been charged with treason and is being questioned. According to reports, she criticised the interim government of Bangladesh.
Shaon’s arrest came hours after the attack on her family’s house and the subsequent arson. According to local media reports, students and local residents set fire to the house near Norundi railway station in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila around 6 pm. The house belonged to her father, Mohammad Ali, an engineer.
Who is Meher Afroz Shaon?
Meher Afroz Shaon is a Bangladeshi political figure. Her father sought the Awami League nomination for the last national election. Her mother, Begum Tahura Ali, served twice in Parliament as an MP for a reserved women’s seat. Shaon also contested a reserved parliamentary seat as an Awami League candidate in the last election.
Shaon is believed to be close to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina fled to India after the coup in 2024, where she is living in exile.
Shaon began her career as a child artist 37 years ago, making her first appearance in the 1988 television serial ‘Swadhinota‘. In addition to her acting career, she is a renowned singer and dancer. Shaon is married to writer-director Humayun Ahmed. In 2016, she received the National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the film ‘Krishnopokkho’.
