The Syrain rebels who ousted President Bashir al-Assad and took over the power in Damascus have named Mohammed al-Bashir as caretaker Prime Minister of transitional government that will be in place until March 1, the state media reported on Tuesday.
“The general command has tasked us with running the transitional government until March 1,” said a statement attributed to Bashir on state television’s Telegram account, as reported by news agency AFP.
According to the reports, the leader of Syria’s Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group Abu Mohammed al-Jolani had met outgoing Syrian prime minister Mohammed al-Jalali on Monday and discussed the “transfer of power”.
Who Is Mohammed al-Bashir?
- Bashir, a Syrian engineer and politician, previously led the Salvation Government, affiliated with HTS, which governed only parts of northwestern Syria and Idlib.
- According to report by The News Arab, he served as the fifth prime minister of the self-declared HTS administration, the Syrian Salvation Government, in January.
- He also ran the administration in a small rebel-held pocket before the offensive. He was also in the body overseen by the Islamist group.
- He was born in Jabal Zawiya region of Idlib in 1986. According to a CV published by the Salvation Government, Bashir holds multiple qualifications spanning engineering, law, and administrative planning.
- He earned a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Bashir then went on to specialise in communications, from the University of Aleppo in 2007. In 2010, he completed an advanced English course, administered by the ministry of education.
- In 2021, he obtained a degree in Sharia and law with honours from the University of Idlib. He also received a certificate in administrative planning and a certification in project management from the Syrian International Academy for Training, Languages, and Consulting.
- Bashir also worked as an engineer supervising the establishment of a gas plant affiliated with the Syrian Gas Company.
Bashir will now face the challenge of navigating Syria’s transitional phase, addressing both political instability and the reconstruction of war-torn regions formerly under HTS control.
Assad, who fled to Russia on Sunday and took asylum in Moscow, led to the downfall of the five-decades-long reign of his family in Syria, and his own 24 years of rule in the country.
Celebrations broke out on the streets of Damascus after his ouster. At the same time, chaos also erupted in the city as Assad’s palace was looted by the crowd who got a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle of the leader.
