The direct impact of changing lifestyles and eating habits is increasingly visible on health. Numerous such cases have emerged where girls between the ages of six and nine are experiencing early-onset menstruation, which was rarely seen in the past.
Local18 spoke with Dr Sadhna Kala, a renowned gynaecologist at Apollo Cradle Hospital in Delhi, who expressed concern over this trend.
Why Do Periods Start At An Early Age?
Dr Kala explained that early menstruation can sometimes be attributed to genetic factors. For example, if a girl’s mother, grandmother, or maternal grandmother began menstruating early, it may impact subsequent generations. Environmental factors also play a major role.
Today, children experience high levels of academic stress from an early age. Many parents pressure young children to perform in school. Another major reason is reduced physical activity for healthy development, as children spend more time on mobile devices and computers.
All these factors affect a child’s health, potentially leading to early menstruation.
Dr Kala also highlighted that family dynamics can influence early menstruation. For example, witnessing parental conflicts or divorce can impact a child’s mental and physical health. Children exposed to physical abuse at a young age are also at risk of early menstruation. Furthermore, changing dietary habits, including increased consumption of processed foods, can contribute significantly to this trend.
Tips To Prevent Early Menstruation
Dr Kala recommended that parents should encourage physical activities for their daughters from an early age, minimising academic pressure to avoid undue stress. A diet rich in fruits, dairy products such as milk, yoghurt, and cheese, and a focus on homemade meals rather than outside food are crucial. Early menstruation can also affect height growth, so activities like running and cycling should be encouraged to promote healthy physical development.
