There are many things around us that we don’t think twice about. Even if questions arise, hardly anyone tries to know why it is so! For instance, you must have seen many wells but have you wondered why they are mostly round in shape? Is it just because it looks beautiful or does it serve any other purpose? Let’s find out today!
One can construct a triangular, square, or hexagonal well, but it will not last long. The reason behind this is that the more corners there are, the more water pressure there will be on those corners. Due to this pressure on the walls of the well, cracks start appearing, and the walls collapse prematurely.
The advantage with a circular well is that the water pressure is the same on all sides. The force of water is neither less nor more, and these wells remain intact for many decades. Thus, round wells are built as they are stronger than wells of other shapes. Moreover, it is more stable than square or triangular wells as it is less likely to sink under pressure.
There are a few other reasons behind choosing to build circular wells. One of them is the cost of construction. Building round wells requires fewer materials and labour and, thus, is cheaper. Moreover, it is easier to drill round wells than square or triangular wells.
Most importantly, round wells, in comparison to other types of wells, produce more water with the least amount of effort. This is the reason why although wells can be dug in any shape, round wells are most common.
