On August 16, China vowed “resolute and strong measures” against Philippine coastguard ships at Sabina Shoal, accusing them of infringing on Chinese sovereignty and violating the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). China claims Sabina Shoal, also known as Xianbin Reef, is within its territory and is monitoring Philippine activity closely. Concurrently, China expressed dramatic concern over a U.S. missile system in the Philippines, deeming it a destabilizing factor. The U.S. and Philippines condemn China’s aggressive stance in the region, which involves overlapping claims with several other countries.
