With the advent of the internet and smartphones, our lives have become increasingly intertwined with these technologies. While some utilise them for personal and societal benefit, others exploit them for malicious purposes.
A 26-year-old Spanish woman allegedly orchestrated a sophisticated scam, defrauding over three hundred men using only a cheap smartphone.
According to a report by The Mirror, Spanish police arrested the 26-year-old who was wanted in connection with 311 cases of fraud and extortion. The police claimed that the woman had been operating for the past eight months, during which time she amassed approximately £13,500, which is around Rs 15 lakh.
The woman was apprehended in Azkoitia, near San Sebastian. Following her arrest, she revealed her modus operandi to the police.
Despite her limited resources, the woman was remarkably adept at manipulating her victims. The police revealed that she used a simple smartphone and a photo montage app to create compromising images of men by superimposing their faces onto AI-generated bodies. She would then threaten to share these images publicly and with the victims’ families unless they paid her a sum of money.
Upon examining her phone, investigators discovered evidence of her crimes, including approximately 3,500 chat logs in which she can be seen blackmailing men.
