The star Indian all-rounder, Nitish Reddy shared a hilarious story of how he tried to get shoes from Virat Kohli during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and ended up scoring his maiden Test century in Melbourne later on.
In a podcast on Puma’s YouTube channel, Reddy recalled how Kohli was looking to give away his shoes and the 21-year-old was desperate to get his hands on them.
“Back in the locker room, he (Kohli) once asked Sarfaraz (Khan), ‘Sarfu, tera size kya hai?’ (Sarfaraz, what’s your shoe size?), and he said, ‘Nine.’ Then he turned to me, and I thought, ‘Oh my god, I have to guess this correctly,’ because even if they weren’t my size, I really wanted his shoes. I said, ‘10,’ and he gave them to me. In the next match, I wore those shoes and scored a hundred!” said Reddy in a podcast on PUMA’s Youtube channel on Thursday.
Reddy’s century proved to be a pivotal moment in his career as he cemented himself as a fine all-round option for the future of Indian Test cricket. He went on to score 114 off 189 deliveries hitting 11 boundaries and one six.
After getting to the milestone, Reddy’s father was seen on broadcast crying in happiness which ended up being one of the biggest viral moments during that tour. Reddy also revealed that Kohli congratulated him after his knock.
“When Virat bhai (Kohli) finally walked up and told me I had played a wonderful game, that moment itself was special for me. I was also scanning the stands for my father but couldn’t find him. Later, I saw on the screen that he was crying,” he shared.
Since the Australia tour, Reddy suffered a side-strain injury prior to the home T20I series against England. Having recovered, he will now look to shift his focus to the IPL where he hopes to be the difference for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the coming season.
Having played international cricket since his breakout season last year, Reddy will now look to improve his performances and establish himself as a top draw in the 2025 season for SRH.
The franchise will begin their campaign at home against Rajasthan Royals in a day game on March 23 (Saturday)
