Cancer is a serious disease, but early detection makes treatment possible and improves the chances of recovery
Cancer is a growing concern in our country, with nearly 1,500,000 new cases diagnosed each year and approximately 150,000 deaths attributed to the disease annually. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, making it crucial to recognize the warning signs at an early stage. Advances in diagnostic and treatment methods have contributed to better prognoses, but the key remains catching cancer in its initial phases.
Dr. Naveen Sanchety, Director, Surgical Oncology at Sarvodaya Hospital, Sector-8, Faridabad, emphasizes the importance of awareness. “The best way to improve outcomes is to catch cancer in its early stage. We should know the subtle signs and symptoms that may serve as early indicators of the disease.”
Recognizing the Symptoms: The CAUTION Mnemonic
One way to remember the common warning signs of cancer is through the mnemonic CAUTION:
C: Change in bowel or bladder habits
A: A sore that doesn’t heal
U: Unusual bleeding or discharge
T: Thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere
I: Indigestion or difficulty swallowing
O: Obvious change in a wart or mole
N: Nagging cough or hoarseness
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is essential to consult an oncologist for evaluation. Dr. Sanchety clarifies, “The presence of these signs doesn’t necessarily mean that a person has cancer, but they should be thoroughly examined to rule it out.”
Other Symptoms You Should Not Ignore
Dr Lakhan Kashyap, Consultant, Medical Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune, also highlights additional symptoms that could indicate cancer:
- Unexplained Weight Loss“If you are losing weight rapidly without dieting or exercising, it could be a sign of an underlying issue, including cancer.”
- Persistent Cough or Hoarseness“A cough that lasts more than three weeks or a persistent change in voice warrants medical evaluation.”
- Non-Healing Wounds“Any wound, especially on the mouth or skin, that does not heal for an extended period can be a potential warning sign.”
- Unexplained Bleeding“Blood in the urine, stool, cough, or vomit should never be ignored.”
- Abnormal Lumps or Swelling“A new lump or a change in the size of an existing lump anywhere in the body should be examined promptly.”
- Chronic Indigestion or Difficulty Swallowing“Persistent digestive issues or trouble swallowing can indicate an underlying condition, including cancer.”
- Changes in Skin Appearance“Variations in the color, shape, or texture of a mole or scar can be an early indicator of skin cancer.”
Take Action for Early Detection
Cancer is a serious disease, but early detection makes treatment possible and improves the chances of recovery. If you notice any of the above symptoms, seeking medical advice immediately is crucial. Dr. Kashyap advises, “These signs may seem minor, but ignoring them could be overwhelming. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor without delay.”
By being vigilant about the warning signs, staying informed, and opting for regular health check-ups, we can take a proactive approach to cancer detection and treatment, potentially saving lives.
