Anil Agarwal, founder of Vedanta Resources, stressed that confidence and determination matter more than English fluency, sharing his journey from humble beginnings.
Anil Agarwal: “The world doesn’t move because of perfect grammar. It moves when you do.”
In a country where English often dominates as the language of opportunity and success, industrialist Anil Agarwal has shared a powerful reminder that confidence and determination matter far more than fluency.
Reflecting on his humble beginnings and journey to success, Agarwal emphasized that fluency in English is not a prerequisite to dream big or achieve great things.
“If I were 20 today, I wouldn’t wait to be perfect before speaking,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), recalling how he began his entrepreneurial journey with limited resources and just a few English phrases picked up from Bollywood films.
Agarwal humorously remembered a line from the film Amar Akbar Anthony — “My name is Anthony Gonsalves. You see, the whole country of the system is juxtapositioned…” — noting how it didn’t make sense but still brought laughter. “Because sometimes, confidence is louder than words,” he added.
In a country where English is often viewed as a marker of status and intelligence, Agarwal’s message came as a refreshing reminder that success has no language barrier. “I never quite mastered English, but it never stopped me from walking into a room, making a pitch, closing a deal,” he said.
He highlighted how people across India — miners, factory workers, rural women — have inspired him deeply, despite not speaking English, simply because of their powerful stories and resilience.
So here’s what he’s learned: You can dream, build, and succeed in this world, even if your accent doesn’t sound “right,” or you don’t have the most expensive tech, or the best degree.
If I were 20 today, I wouldn’t wait to be perfect before speaking.I started my journey with little money, big dreams, and a few lines of English from movies.
