Who Was Hulk Hogan?

Hulk Hogan, born Terry Gene Bollea on August 11, 1953, was an American professional wrestler and pop culture icon. Known for his distinctive blond moustache, bandanas, and muscular physique, Hogan was one of the most recognisable figures in professional wrestling history. Widely considered the most popular wrestler of the 1980s, he played a pivotal role in bringing wrestling into the mainstream and was regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

Hogan’s wrestling career began in 1977, but he became a global sensation after joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1983. Portraying an all-American hero, he headlined eight of the first nine WrestleManias and won the WWF Championship five times. His 1,474-day title reign remains the longest of the WrestleMania era. He also became the first wrestler to win back-to-back Royal Rumbles in 1990 and 1991. His legendary 1988 match against André the Giant still holds the record for the most-watched wrestling broadcast in U.S. television history.

After leaving WWF in 1993 to pursue acting, Hogan joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1994. There, he won six world titles and transformed his character into the villainous “Hollywood” Hogan, leading the influential New World Order (nWo) faction. This era in wrestling, known as the “Monday Night War,” saw Hogan contribute to making WCW’s Starrcade 1997 its most successful pay-per-view event.

Hogan returned to WWE in 2002, winning the Undisputed Championship before departing in 2003. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice – once individually in 2005 and again in 2020 as part of the nWo. Beyond WWE and WCW, he also wrestled for NJPW, AWA, and TNA.

Outside the ring, Hogan had a notable entertainment career, with roles in Rocky III, No Holds Barred, Suburban Commando, and Mr. Nanny. He also starred in the reality series Hogan Knows Best and was a musician with The Wrestling Boot Band.

Hulk Hogan passed away on July 24, 2025, at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy that forever shaped the world of professional wrestling and sports entertainment.
