In the heat of the World Series, some fans of the New York Yankees celebrated an injury to Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani in a move that has been branded as ‘classless’ on social media.
Ohtani injured himself after sliding into second base during Game 2 of the Fall Classic in Los Angeles on Saturday – leaving the Japanese star on the ground holding his arm in pain.
He was diagnosed with a subluxation (a partial dislocation) in his left shoulder and did not return to the game, which the Dodgers won 4-2.
A few fans of the Yankees watching back in The Bronx decided to celebrate Ohtani’s injury – with video from one bar showing that some fans were cheering.
One fan in particular decided to throw up a middle finger at the 30-year-old as he laid on the ground in pain.

After being helped off the field, Ohtani underwent strength tests and range-of-motion tests which came back positive.
The slugger then iced his shoulder and was able to leave Dodger Stadium without the use of a sleeve.
He underwent an MRI on Sunday morning, but no details from that have been provided by the team.
According to a text sent to ESPN’s Karl Ravech, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says that Ohtani will be playing in Monday’s Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.
Prior to a workout on Sunday, Roberts said that Ohtani still had to go through a workout of his own before confirming that he’ll play – but says that things are trending in that direction.
‘That’s my expectation talking to the training staff and getting the reports,’ Roberts said. ‘If it’s a pain-tolerance situation, I just don’t see him not playing Game 3.’Â
In his first ever postseason appearance, Ohtani is slashing .260/.403/.460 with three home runs and 10 RBIs – but has not stolen any bases having been caught twice.
This year, Ohtani became the first member of the 50/50 club, having smacked 54 home runs and stolen 59 bases in the regular season.
