Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal added another feather to his cap on Wednesday as India locked horns with England in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Old Trafford, Manchester. The left-hander brought up his 12th Test fifty, but it held a special place in India’s rich cricket history. He became the first Indian opening batter to score a half-century in Manchester since 1974.
Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar was the last Indian opener to get a fifty-plus score at this venue. He ended up scoring 101 off 251 deliveries as the visitors posted 246 in the first innings, in reply to England’s 328/9. Gavaskar continued his supremacy in the second innings as well, scoring a fighting 58 off 140 deliveries, but his efforts couldn’t avoid a 113-run defeat.
Comes 2025 when India are playing a Test match at Old Trafford after a decade. Jaiswal, after stitching a 94-run opening stand with KL Rahul, got his fifty in the second session to make way into the record books.
Interestingly, India have played just 2 Test matches in Manchester in the last couple of decades. Back in 1990, Sachin Tendulkar scored his maiden Test ton at this venue, in the second innings. Then Indian captain, Mohammad Azharuddin, smashed 179 in the first innings as the game ended in a draw. Since then, no India batter has scored a century at Old Trafford.
In 2014, India succumbed to an innings defeat while playing a Test match in Manchester. MS Dhoni was the top scorer for India, getting 71 off 133 balls in the second innings. As many as 6 batters were out without scoring across innings.
Meanwhile, Jaiswal’s knock came to an end in the second session as Liam Dawson bagged a Test wicket after 8 years. It was the 41st over of the Indian innings when Jaiswal nicked Dawson’s delivery to Harry Brook at the first slip, and departed for 58 after facing 107 deliveries. His innings included 10 boundaries and a six.
