Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brilliant 87 on the opening day of the second Test between India and England in Birmingham.

Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal narrowly missed breaking the legendary Rahul Dravid’s record of becoming the fastest Indian to score 2,000 Test runs by just 10 runs.
During the second Test at Edgbaston, Jaiswal needed 97 runs to achieve the milestone in 39 innings, surpassing Dravid, who took 40 innings. However, he was dismissed by England skipper Ben Stokes, who broke a solid 66-run partnership between Jaiswal and skipper Shubman Gill. Jaiswal returned to the pavilion after a brilliant 107-ball 87, which included 13 fours.
In 21 Tests and 39 innings, Jaiswal has scored 1,990 runs at an average of 53.78, with five centuries and 11 fifties, his best score being 214*. In this series so far, he has amassed 192 runs in three innings across two matches at an average of 64.00, with a century and a fifty. In the next innings, Jaiswal has a chance to equal Dravid’s record. The fastest to 2,000 Test runs is Australian legend Don Bradman, who achieved it in 15 matches and 22 innings.
Jaiswal’s performance against England has been remarkable, with 904 runs in seven Tests and 12 innings at an average of 82.18, including three centuries and four fifties, his best score being 214*.
A half-century stand between Jaiswal and skipper Shubman Gill brought India closer to the 200-run mark at the end of the second session on day one of the second Test against England in Birmingham on Wednesday.
Despite another shared session due to Jaiswal’s dismissal, India stood at 182/3, with Gill (42*) and Rishabh Pant (14*) unbeaten.
India began the second session at 98/2, with Jaiswal (62*) and skipper Gill (1*) at the crease. With a double, India reached the 100-run mark in 25.3 overs. Gill and Jaiswal played more cautiously, with the Indian skipper surviving a close leg-before-wicket call against Chris Woakes. Later, Gill relieved some pressure with two boundaries in the 33rd over.
The duo was in no rush to score after a solid first session, achieving their fifty-run partnership in 103 balls. The skipper focused on settling in, while Jaiswal toned down his attacking play.
Just when it seemed Gill and Jaiswal would end the session together, Ben Stokes produced a breakthrough. With the ball in hand, the England skipper managed to edge Jaiswal’s bat, which was caught by wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith.
Jaiswal walked back after a brilliant 87 from 107 balls, leaving India at 161/3 in 45.1 overs, ending a 66-run third-wicket partnership.
Rishabh Pant came to the crease next, breaking a 22-ball block session with a six off a Shoaib Bashir delivery, while Gill reached the 40s at the other end. Gill and Pant ended the session without any further loss.
