Premier League title aspirants Arsenal stand 9 points behind table-toppers Liverpool at the end of a dozen games in the English top flight this campaign as Arne Slot’s Merseyside unit has 31 points to their name as compared to the Gunners’ 22.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was quizzed if his side need to be near-perfect henceforth in order to remain relevant in the title race, the Spaniard opined that the Londoners need to demonstrate consistency in performance if they are to chase down Liverpool.
He also lauded Liverpool’s incredible run of 10 wins, a draw and a loss in their 12 outings so far this season and added that his side would need to be flawless in order to catch up to Slot’s men.
“If they continue that way, that’s for sure, with the numbers they’re producing and the amount of games they’re winning,” Arteta said.
“But the focus is on us, maintaining the consistency, especially in performances, that will give us the right to win a lot of games. This is a long run,” the Gunners boss added.
He explained that the confidence gained through victories were crucial in garnering momentum to mount a title thrust in the cut-throat Premier League race.
“Winning lifts the energy and our confidence,” Arteta elucidated.
“They were two big wins for us and now it’s about consistency, getting that momentum, take it further against a good opponent tomorrow and trying to replicate the performance to win the game,” he added.
Arsenal visit West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday, on the back of a 5-1 drubbing of Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League midweek.
The Gunners are slated to take on Manchester United four days later, on the 5th of December, and Arteta shed light on how crucial it was to maintain a good level during all outings.
“This is every three days so it doesn’t matter what you did yesterday, it’s about the next days, the next performance. Are you able to sustain high-level performance throughout the game as well because of how competitive every opponent is right now? And that’s what we will try to do tomorrow,” he continued.
Arteta also lauded the efforts of skipper Martin Odegaard, who returned from a two-month injury layoff to lift the spirits of the team and turn the fortunes of the Arsenal side around since his return.
“Good players that are so consistent and so reliable, that can take the game to a different level and make the players better around them — that’s a huge quality of Martin’s and he has been missed,” Arteta added.
