Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham has finalized a permanent move to Borussia Dortmund, as announced by both clubs on Tuesday.
The English midfielder is following in the footsteps of his older brother Jude by joining the Bundesliga team.
Financial details were not disclosed by the newly-promoted Premier League club, but British media reported that Dortmund would pay an initial fee of 33 million euros ($37.70 million) for Jobe, who will participate in this month’s Club World Cup.
Sunderland confirmed it was a club-record fee and that a sell-on clause was included in the agreement, while Dortmund stated that the England Under-21 international had signed a five-year contract.
The reported fee would make 19-year-old Jobe the second-most expensive signing in Dortmund’s history, following the recruitment of Ousmane Dembele for 35 million euros in 2016.
Jobe departs Sunderland after a two-year tenure, culminating in the club’s promotion to the top flight with a playoff final victory over Sheffield United, following their fourth-place finish in the second-tier Championship.
“It’s time for me to say farewell to all the loyal people of Sunderland, who have supported me through two incredible years in red and white,” Jobe said. “Your support has often blown me away, especially during challenging times, which we overcame together.”
In a separate statement, he said: “I’m very happy to be a Borussia Dortmund player now and to compete for titles with this great club… And I’m very happy to wear the black and yellow jersey at the FIFA Club World Cup.”
Jude Bellingham played for Dortmund for three seasons before his 103 million euros move to Real Madrid, where the England international won the LaLiga and Champions League titles in his first season.
