Prior to Bengaluru FC facing off against Mohun Bagan SG in the final of the ISL on Saturday, former India captain Sunil Chhetri has put out a message to their fans, thanking them for their unbridled support.
Chhetri, who emerged as BFC’s savior yet again, in the semifinal against FC Goa by scoring the crucial fixture-winner, was overwhelmed by emotion ahead of the ISL final tonight and took to social media to share his thoughts on the incredible fan support that he and his teammates have received throughout the season.
“I know a lot of you cannot be here, but don’t for one minute forget, that it is you who brought us till here,” Chhetri wrote in a post on Instagram.
“We’re lucky to be loved the way we are, and before things kick off, I just wanted to say that we love you too.”
Chhetri’s loving sentiment was echoed by BFC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who reminisced and spoke fondly about his long association with the city.
“As you know, my journey as a professional footballer started here, and I was very lucky to be getting opportunities to play matches from the beginning. I am grateful for the journey,” Sandhu stated in a pre-match conference.
League Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant finished on top of the table this season with 17 wins in 24 matches. While they lost the first leg of their semi-final tie against Jamshedpur FC, the multi-time winners delivered under pressure by beating their opponents 2-0 in the return leg, sealing their spot in the ISL final.
Bengaluru FC had a similar semi-final run. They won the first leg 2-0 but conceded an early goal against FC Goa in the second leg. Armando Sadiku tied things in the 88th minute. Just when extra time seemed to be on the cards, the legendary Sunil Chhetri produced a moment of genius to find the net in added time to secure Bengaluru FC’s spot in yet another final.
Tonight will mark BFC’s fourth ISL final in just eight seasons, while MBSG, who has become the team to beat in recent history, is the very first team to reach this stage three successive times.
Shall history repeat itself tonight, in the form of the ISL final back in 2023, where MBSG triumphed over BFC? Or will new history be made?
