Manchester United shareholder Jim Ratcliffe voiced that he would walk away from the Premier League side if he were subjected to the degree of criticism that the American owners Glazers have had to put up with over the years.
United have been a far cry from the fabled unit they once were under the watchful eye of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as the Red Devils have jumped from one head coach to another without top flight success for a decade now since the legendary Scot stepped down from the helm of the side.
The Glazers have bore the brunt of the blame for United underwhelming showing in recent years, and Ratcliffe, who purchased a minority share in the club back in the year 2023, before adding on to it in the subsequent year revealed that he if the criticism and abuse he has to face reached the level of what the American owners have had to endure, he’d rather walk away.
“I can put up with it for a while,” Ratcliffe said.
“I don’t mind being unpopular because I get that nobody likes seeing Manchester United down where they are, and nobody likes the decisions we’re having to make at the moment,” the INEOS boss added.
“If I draw a bit of the ire, I can put up with that. But I’m no different to the average person. It’s not nice, particularly for friends and family,” he continued.
“So, eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I’d have to say, look, enough’s enough guys, let somebody else do this,” the 72-year-old added.
United find themselves in the bottom half of the English top flight and have been a mere shadow of the superior force they used to be a decade ago. Ratcliffe said that the abuse the Glazers have had to put up with over the years have pushed them into the background, a fate he would look to avoid at all costs.
“They can’t really come to a match, the Glazers. They’ve retreated into the shadows a bit now, so I’m getting all the stick,” he added.
“We bought in and I haven’t seen them since. It’s, ‘thank you, Jim, you’re doing a really good job,’ the Brit said.
“At the moment, I don’t have security, I don’t have to walk around like that. But it would defeat the object, wouldn’t it? You couldn’t tolerate it at that level, it just wouldn’t be fun,” he concluded.
