Tucked away in the lofty heights of Uttarakhand, near the international borders of India with China and Nepal, lie some of the state’s most sacred and stunning hidden gems, each steeped in religious significance and natural beauty, yet accessible only with special permits due to their proximity to sensitive border zones.
Situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, Om Parvat is one of the most spiritually revered peaks in the Himalayas. The natural snow formation on the mountain astonishingly resembles the sacred ‘Om’ symbol, drawing devout pilgrims and curious travellers alike from across the country. As this region lies close to the Indo-Nepal and Indo-China borders, it falls under a protected zone, and visitors must obtain a permit from Dharchula tehsil before making their journey.
Timmersain Mahadev (Uttarakhand’s Own Amarnath): Deep within the Niti village of Chamoli district lies a hidden wonder – Timmersain Mahadev cave. Known as Uttarakhand’s replica of the Amarnath shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, this sacred site houses a naturally-formed ice Shivling. As with its northern counterpart, this mystical cave is also located in a protected area and has begun attracting spiritual seekers and explorers alike.
Kuti Village: At a staggering altitude of 12,000 feet, Kuti is the last inhabited village before the Indo-China border and is often described as one of the most beautiful settlements of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and steeped in mythology, it serves as the gateway to the holy Adi Kailash mountain. Due to its sensitive location, travellers require an Inner Line Permit to enter.
Nelang Valley: Located 115 kilometres from Uttarkashi, at an altitude of 11,000 feet, Nelang Valley offers landscapes and weather reminiscent of Ladakh and Spiti. Nestled within the Gangotri National Park, this valley boasts stark beauty and a rugged charm, earning it the nickname ‘Ladakh of Uttarakhand’. Again, due to its proximity to the border, visitors need an Inner Line Permit to explore this area.
Chhaialekh: Perched at 11,000 feet, Chhaialekh is often referred to as the ‘Valley of Flowers’ of the Vyas Valley region in Pithoragarh. What makes it truly breathtaking is the clear view it offers of Nepal’s majestic Annapurna range. The Indian Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) maintain a constant presence here, and entry is strictly regulated with permit checks required before proceeding further.
