Former Ukrainian economy minister Yuliia Svyrydenko was appointed as the new prime minister of the country, news agency AP reported on Thursday.
She replaced Denys Shmyhal on the job, who announced his resignation on Tuesday. He held the position for over five years after his appointment on March 4, 2020.
Yuliia was the key negotiator in the mineral deal with the United States. With her appointment as the PM, she became Ukraine’s first new head of government since the start of the war with Russia in 2022.
She is among the group of officials given new roles in the country’s government, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reshuffles the Cabinet. His move comes in a bid to energise the nation.
At home, the Cabinet changes haven’t been viewed as a big shake-up. Zelenskyy is still counting on officials who have shown they are capable and loyal during the ongoing war, now in its fourth year.
On Thursday, Zelenskyy proposed changes to key government posts, including replacing Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal — the longest-serving prime minister in Ukraine’s history.
Shmyhal will now become the defence minister, according to the parliamentary website.
More changes in the Cabinet are likely, but the main focus is on Svyrydenko becoming the new prime minister.
She was an important part of the talks for a mineral deal between the US and Ukraine, making sure the terms worked for Kyiv. She has often spoken on Ukraine’s behalf in important meetings with Western allies, mainly about defence, rebuilding the economy, and recovery efforts.
Lawmakers and other officials see her as a hardworking leader who is known for being loyal to the president’s office.
