Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday he is ready for direct talks with Russia once Kyiv reaches a common position with the United States and Europe on how to end the three-year war.
“We are ready for any conversations with America and our allies. If they provide us with specific answers to specific requests from us and a common understanding of the dangerous Putin, then, with our unified understanding, we will be ready to talk with the Russians,” Zelenskyy said.
His remarks came at the Munich security conference which started days after US President Donald Trump and Putin held talks on the war in Ukraine.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, when asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin and negotiations with him on ending the war, said, “You don’t have to trust somebody to negotiate with them”.
Earlier, Dmytro Lytvyn, an advisor to Zelenskyy had said that a common position with allies must be on the table for a conversation with the Russians. “For the moment there is nothing on the table. Discussions with the Russians are not envisaged,” he had said.
“The Ukrainian position remains unchanged. Ukraine must first speak with America. Europe must participate in any serious discussion on a real and sustainable peace,” Lytvyn added.
