Unified Payments Interface (UPI) set a new record in July, with the grocery delivery giants Zepto, Blinkit, and BigBasket topping the charts. Data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) shows the sector logged 3.03 billion transactions worth Rs 64,882 crore, the highest among all categories.
UPI Payments Worth Thousands of Crores At Petrol Pumps
Petrol pumps also witnessed significant UPI activity, with transactions amounting to Rs 35,188 crore. The fast food industry earned Rs 13,794.2 crore from 1.2 billion transactions, while restaurants collected Rs 18,212 crore from 1.1 billion transactions. Additionally, telecommunication services saw payments worth Rs 21,628.8 crore.
Remarkably, debt collection agencies outperformed other sectors, collecting Rs 93,857 crore from 161 million transactions related to loan and EMI repayments. Overall, UPI merchant payments (P2M) reached Rs 7.34 lakh crore from 12.38 billion transactions in July.
When considering person-to-person (P2P) transfers, the total number of transactions climbed to 19.47 billion, worth Rs 25.08 lakh crore. Of these, 7.08 billion P2P transactions were valued at Rs 17.74 lakh crore, surpassing June’s figures of 18.40 billion transactions and Rs 24.04 lakh crore.
Drug Stores And Pharmacies Log Transactions Worth Thousands of Crores
Digital gaming saw Rs 10,077 crore spent across 35 crore transactions, while cigar shops accounted for Rs 1,900 crore. Drug stores and pharmacies saw transactions worth Rs 11,825 crore, and bakeries accounted for Rs 3,779 crore. The dairy sector recorded Rs 4,373 crore in transactions from 18 crore instances. Debt collection agencies, with Rs 93,857 crore from 16 crore transactions, had an average transaction value of Rs 5,817, indicative of EMI and loan repayments.
Online Shopping Apps Record Transactions Worth Thousands of Crores
Online marketplaces such as Amazon, Meesho, and Flipkart saw transactions worth Rs 8,054 crore from 12 crore instances. Clothing shops recorded Rs 10,874 crore, while electronics shops saw Rs 10,068 crore. Liquor shops accounted for Rs 5,920 crore, bars and nightclubs Rs 3,314 crore, and taxi services like Uber and Ola Rs 1,186 crore.
These figures highlight the growing preference for UPI payments across various sectors, from daily necessities to entertainment. As UPI continues to integrate into everyday life, its usage is expected to strengthen further, making transactions more convenient for consumers.
