Reddit thread on life cheat codes goes viral with advice on fitness, sleep and compound interest
Reddit is popping with an entertaining thread about cheat codes for life.
It’s been a minute since we dived into the Reddit bucket here at OutKick. I guess all the geo-political events around the world have been dominating my attention.
For those of you who might not be familiar with Reddit, it’s truly one of the final untamed frontiers of the internet. It’s a wild place full of a wide variety of content and discussions.
Some are downright bonkers, and others can be more uplifting. The latter is what brings us here today.

Life cheat codes go viral on Reddit
A Reddit thread titled, “What ‘cheat code’ for life do you wish you’d discovered earlier?” is putting up big numbers on r/AskReddit.
The responses are all over the place, and will be among the most interesting things you read today. Check out some of the top ones below, and let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com:
- Sleep is the one drug that will increase your quality of life most. Kindness is peak human performance and benefits you as much as the recipient of the kindness.
- Learning how to say “No” without giving fake excuse.
- No one really is paying that much attention. If they are it’s short lived, so do what you want that makes you happy.
- Working out 3-5 times a week not only makes you stronger. It helps mentally, prevents injury, makes you feel good, boosts your confidence and so on. It’s the best damn thing you can do.
- Filling my sock drawer with all the same socks.
- The best way to get a raise is to get a job at a different company.
- EVERYTHING is easier if you are physically fit and in shape.
- Compound interest. I would have started saving for my retirement with my first paycheck if I really understood the benefits of early regular investing and time.
- Done is better than perfect.
- Stop caring so much about what other people think of you. Invest more in your home—even if you’re only renting. Turn it into a space so comforting, beautiful, and you that you actually want to stay in all the time.
- Consistency beats motivation. Small actions repeated every day usually achieve more than occasional bursts of effort when you feel inspired.
- Don’t drink your calories
- Compound interest/low risk investing.
- This is your life and you are living it. Things aren’t going to magically change; no one is coming to save you. If you want changes in your life, you have to do it yourself. Stop waiting.
- You can just say “no” when people ask you to do things you don’t want to. This even works at work!
- Sleep… THE wonder drug that’s free, yet somehow still under-prescribed.
- Rest is important as hard work.
- No one’s coming to save you.
- You can be happy alone and should be able to be happy alone or you’re not really happy.
- So much of life really comes down to getting enough sleep, getting some exercise, eating health, and interacting with people outside your home or workplace.
- Eat healthy, exercise daily.
- Knowing which battles are worth fighting and which ones are just causing you (or someone else) stress for no real reason.
- Having a positive attitude will improve your life.

Overall, lots of interesting advice. I will tell you the single “cheat code” I use in life that is awesome. I turned on the do not disturb setting on my phone about six months ago, and never turned it off. I also turned on the setting where you can’t even get through unless you’re in my contacts.
It’s amazing. Now, I do have a small list of favorites who can ring through in the event of a critical event, but other than that, I get zero notifications for calls, texts, social media or anything else.
It’s honestly nothing short of amazing. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got in life (the person was more successful than me by orders of magnitude) was to limit how accessible you are for people. I was a teenager when I was told that, and I never forgot it.
Unless nukes are in the air, the odds that I need to take any given phone call immediately are hovering barely north of zero percent.
Give it a shot. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy it.
