IVF: Why Success Rates Are Not Universal But Depend On Age And Ovarian Health? | Health and Fitness News

Seek personalised protocols rather than generic IVF plans; the best results come from tailoring treatment to your unique medical profile.

IVF cannot be a one-size-fits-all solution; it works with the biological starting point each patient brings, and the most effective treatment plans are those that recognise and work around these individual variables.

When it comes to IVF, success rates are never a fixed number. They are deeply individual, shaped most strongly by a woman’s age and the condition of her ovaries. In the 20s and early 30s, the eggs are typically healthier, and we see a much higher proportion of transfers resulting in live births – often close to 40–50%. After 35, both the quantity and genetic quality of eggs begin to decline sharply, and by the early 40s, the chances of a live birth with one’s own eggs can fall below 10%.

The science behind this is straightforward: as eggs age, the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities rises. This can cause fertilisation to fail, embryos to stop developing, or pregnancies to end in miscarriage. But age is not the only deciding factor. There are women in their late 20s with a low ovarian reserve, sometimes due to endometriosis, surgery, or even genetic predisposition and women in their late 30s with strong ovarian health. This is why tests like AMH levels and antral follicle count are so valuable; they give a clearer picture of how many eggs are available and, by extension, the chances of finding a healthy embryo.

Dr Muskaan Chhabra, Fertility Specialist, Birla Fertility & IVF, Lajpat Nagar shares all you need to know:

Of course, the picture will remain incomplete without looking at other factors such as sperm health, uterine environment, and lifestyle. Poor motility or high DNA fragmentation in sperm can compromise embryo quality, while conditions like fibroids, adhesions, or a thin endometrium can reduce implantation rates. Smoking, extreme weight changes, poor nutrition, and unmanaged stress can also play a role in failed transfers or pregnancies.

IVF cannot be a one-size-fits-all solution; it works with the biological starting point each patient brings, and the most effective treatment plans are those that recognise and work around these individual variables.

Key Takeaways for Maximising IVF Success:

Know your ovarian reserve through AMH testing and antral follicle count before planning IVF.

Act early if you’re aware of conditions like endometriosis or a family history of early menopause.

Optimise sperm health with a fertility work-up, especially if there’s a history of poor motility or miscarriages.

Address uterine health by treating fibroids, adhesions, or endometrial issues before starting treatment.

Adopt a fertility-friendly lifestyle, maintain a healthy weight, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, eat a balanced diet, and manage stress.

Seek personalised protocols rather than generic IVF plans; the best results come from tailoring treatment to your unique medical profile.
