Monitoring screen time, sleep schedule, and radiation exposure is necessary for protecting reproductive health

Excessive use of smartphones can affect an individual’s physical, as well as mental well-being. From poor posture to insomnia, the habit of staring at the screen for a prolonged time contributes to severe issues.

When it comes to fertility, no direct impact of smartphone addiction has been proven yet. However, since it affects overall health, the reproductive potential of both men and women may be compromised due to it. Dr Madhulika Sharma, IVF Specialist at Birla Fertility and IVF, Meerut shares all you need to know:

Excessive screen time, especially at night in bed, can alter the sleep pattern. The blue rays emitted from the screen reduce melatonin secretion- a hormone responsible for managing the sleep-wake cycle. The same hormone is responsible for oocyte growth, maturation, and fertilisation in women, while in men it influences sperm quality and motility. Hence, getting inadequate sleep could disrupt these essential processes, causing fertility related challenges.

In men, keeping laptops in the lap while working may also decrease sperm quality and motility. The heat released from laptops may impact the surrounding tissue and disrupt sperm production.

Mindless scrolling through social media sites can also increase the cortisol levels in the body, which is the body’s main stress hormone. This further deteriorates reproductive health by disturbing the release of other hormones in the body. Additionally, excessive screentime can also strain the eyes causing discomfort, headaches, and blurred vision.

Monitoring screen time, sleep schedule, and radiation exposure is necessary for protecting reproductive health. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance can boost overall health and preserve vitality.
