College football corporate overlords ruin another classic rivalry game with stupid new name

The state of college football is in flux these days, to put it conservatively.

Between increasingly exorbitant NIL bills being footed by fans and boosters alike to an infinitely expanding College Football Playoff, the sport is going through its share of trials and tribulations.

One aspect of college football that has seemingly stood the test of time is the sanctity of the rivalry game (for the most part, anyway).

Sure, some great traditional showdowns have been railroaded thanks to the ever-evolving nature of the modern game, but most of the all-time exciting matchups in college football are safe.

The Game. The Iron Bowl. Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. The Holy War.

These are games with names that have become synonymous with the sport, but lately, our corporate overlords have decided to screw with another tradition that is nearly universally loved by college fans.

The Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs play an annual rivalry game in the city of Jacksonville that is a sight to behold.

Orange and blue on one side, red and black on the other, split down the middle.

And for decades, they called this game “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party,” and although both universities have distanced themselves from the moniker thanks to the negative implications of students drinking themselves blind at a football game (God forbid), the fans still use the name to this day.

Unfortunately, the game has been moved for the next few seasons thanks to renovations at EverBank Stadium, and a bunch of sponsors and suits saw this as an opportunity to rebrand one of the SEC’s coolest rivalry games.

I’m sorry, the WHAT?

I can’t believe they’re going to make Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit vomit out “The Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic” at the top of the broadcast.

I think I’m going to be sick.

Georgia fans and Florida fans can’t agree on anything.

They don’t agree on whether “Florida” or “Georgia” should come first when calling the game the “Florida-Georgia Game.” They don’t agree on the overall record in the series. And they can’t even agree on who coined the term “Bloody Tuesday.”

But one thing they all can agree on is that this name sucks.

What’s even more insulting is the official Mercedes-Benz Stadium X account calling it a “cocktail party” in their social media caption, just reminding us what we lost.

I understand why they accepted a sponsorship to this game, and it’s the same reason every terrible idea has been adopted in modern college football: money.

Oh, and by the way, just because EverBank Stadium is under renovations doesn’t mean this game has to be played at another NFL venue.

These people are aware that the Gators and Bulldogs have on-campus stadiums, right?

It’s not even an unprecedented event to have this game played in Athens or Gainesville, which happened in 1994 and 1995, respectively.

Two of the most iconic venues in the SEC will sit dormant this weekend so that a couple of corporate sponsors can milk some money out of a classic rivalry game.

You gotta love college sports in 2026!
