Democrats defend Obamacare fraud while Trump fights for patients and taxpayers

Democrats love double talk. They claim to defend affordable health care while taxpayers finance fraudulent enrollments that harm the very consumers Obamacare was supposed to protect. Right on cue, they turned the Trump administration’s fraud crackdown into cruelty. Chuck Schumer claims the administration is kicking hundreds of thousands of people off their plans, while former Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls fraud enforcement a “false pretext” for stripping away coverage. Before Democrats declare 760,000 people victims of Republican cruelty, they should explain why taxpayers were financing policies that some consumers never requested, used and know existed.

The Trump administration recently announced that CMS canceled approximately 315,000 unauthorized Obamacare enrollments covering more than 760,000 people and expected to recover approximately $2.2 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies. An additional 419,000 enrollments are undergoing eligibility verification. Every taxpayer and every family struggling to afford health insurance should be alarmed. Instead, Rep. Richard Neal, the ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, accused Republicans of “[doubling] down to take [coverage] away entirely,” warning that the crackdown would increase medical debt and health care costs without acknowledging the fraudulent enrollment or the $2.2 billion in subsidies the administration expects to recover.

GAO found that Biden-era controls failed to verify consumer consent, restrict broker access or notify patients when plans changed. Complaints involving confirmed unauthorized activity more than quadrupled from 2023 through 2025. Predatory brokers used basic personal information to enroll consumers or switch their plans without permission, changed their contact information to conceal the activity and then collected compensation from insurers. Victims risked losing doctors or medications, paying higher copayments and deductibles or repaying tax credits based on false information.

BOMBSHELL REPORT EXPOSES HEALTHCARE FRAUD SCHEMES AS TAXPAYERS LOSE UP TO $521 BILLION ANNUALLY

Democrats are defending enrollment numbers while President Trump is defending patients and taxpayers. Voters care about both fraud and affordability. A recent KFF Health Tracking Poll found that 51% of registered voters consider health care costs extremely important for candidates to discuss, while 43% say the same about fraud in government health programs. Health care fraud is clearly an affordability issue. Every dollar lost to waste or fraud is a dollar unavailable to lower costs or provide care to a legitimate patient.

President Trump’s fraud crackdown proves that protecting patients, safeguarding taxpayers and making health care affordable are all part of the same fight. Obamacare was sold as affordable health care, but affordability is measured by whether eligible patients knowingly receive coverage at a price they can afford, not by fraudulent enrollment numbers.

Putting the patient first requires the administration to distinguish suspected fraud from legitimate patients caught in an eligibility review because of a missing document, outdated address or administrative error. Anyone wrongly removed should receive clear notice, a reasonable opportunity to verify eligibility and prompt restoration of coverage without losing care. Due process strengthens the crackdown by directing accountability toward fraud brokers who initiated questionable applications, enrolled consumers without consent and then pocketed compensation from unauthorized policies.

MEDICAL IDENTITY THEFT FOLLOWS YOU INTO THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE

Protecting patients also requires proactively preventing unauthorized activity. Under CMS’s recent anti-fraud safeguards, brokers must reverify their identities and include verifiable Social Security numbers or immigration-document numbers. CMS also announced that electronic consumer authorization would be required before a broker make changed to an application. GAO separately recommended stronger consent controls, including one-time passcodes, restrictions on broker access and notifications of broker activity. GAO also found that dishonest brokers could change consumers’ contact information and that CMS only sent notices to the newly submitted contact. To close that loophole, GAO recommended that CMS should alert both the old and new contacts whenever an email address or telephone number is changed so a dishonest broker cannot conceal unauthorized activity.

President Trump is turning fraud enforcement into affordability policy by protecting patients and ensuring taxpayer dollars pay for legitimate care. Fraud thrives when Washington rewards enrollment without verifying consent or eligibility. Yet Democrats continue to defend the numbers without asking whether consumers authorized the policies or who profited. American families judge health care through whether they can afford premiums, see their doctors and fill their prescriptions. Republicans can win on affordability by following the Trump standard of care: Protect legitimate patients, provide due process and prosecute those who knowingly profited from abuse. Affordable health care begins with authorized coverage and exposing fraud is not cruelty. While Democrats defend fraudulent enrollment, Republicans should defend the patient.
