As the festive season approaches, it brings with it joy, togetherness, and an abundance of sweets and delicacies. But while celebrations spread joy, they also strain oral health. Teeth face constant sugar, irregular cleaning, and midnight snacks. But with the right tips, it is possible to enjoy the festive season while still protecting your teeth and gums.

Dr. Sanyukta Rege, Periodontist, Laxmi Dental Ltd shares tips to protect your smile:

Sugar attack enamel

Sweets aren’t just treats. They’re fuel for bacteria, when sugar lingers, bacteria thrive. They release acid which eats enamel. The more frequently you eat sugary foods, especially sticky or slow-dissolving sweets, the longer your teeth are exposed to these acids. Eat sweets once, not all day. Rinse your mouth after, not later. Water dilutes acid and washes sugar.

Never skip brushing

Late nights bring laziness. Family time shifts routines. But teeth don’t take holidays. Bacteria stay active always. Carry a toothbrush and floss always. If brushing feels hard, chew sugar-free gum. Even a water rinse helps.

Drink water

Dehydration is common during festive seasons, especially with rich food, alcohol, and long days of celebration. Dry mouth reduces saliva production, which is your body’s natural defence against tooth decay. Sip water through the day, not just when thirsty. Between drinks, drink water. After sweets, rinse. Water helps every step.

See your Dentist, Before it hurts

If you’ve been indulging a lot or have skipped dental appointments for a while, post-festive time is ideal to get a preventive check-up. A dentist can spot early signs of decay, clean up plaque or tartar buildup, and make sure your gums are healthy. Schedule a check-up post-festivity.

Teach kids While They Celebrate

Children love sweets and they forget or avoid brushing. They won’t feel cavities until it’s late. Use fun brushes. Use apps that play music. Make brushing a game. Praise effort. Reward with stories not sweets.

Festivals bring memories. Sweets bring smiles. But smiles stay longer than laddoos. So care for them. A small routine can save a big smile, because joy should last without toothaches tagging along.
