Newcastle United climbed to fifth in the Premier League table with a 3-0 triumph over Aston Villa on Friday as Eddie Howe’s men took their campaign’s tally to 29 points from 18 games thus far.

Newcastle have been on an upward trajectory since the Saudi Arabian takeover and returned to the UEFA Champions League last year following a fourth-placed finish in the 2022-23 season.

The Magpies finished last season seventh in the PL, but seem to have learned from their recent experiences and look to be growing in strength with each passing game.

Howe reminisced about his team from two years ago but added that he has his sights set on moving forward.

“I’d hope we’ve moved on from that team,” Howe said.

“You can never go back in time and replicate what that team was. That team was an outstanding side,” he added.

“But you can never go back. It’s all about the future,” he explained.

Howe put his yardstick of improvement down to handling the ball better when in possession of it and more control of the game overall.

“We’ve signed some new players, the dynamic is slightly different and for me, the evolution of the team always had to be that we wanted to be better with the ball, we wanted to control the game more with the ball,” the Englishman said.

When quizzed if another campaign in the UCL was in sight for the toon army, Howe stated that he would push his side to the best of his abilities, but would proceed to take it one game at a time.

“We’re shooting for whatever we can shoot for,” Howe said when asked about Newcastle’s top-four hopes,” the 47-year-old said.

“We’ll take small steps, we’ll go game-by-game, but I’m really heartened by how the team is playing,” Howe signed off.
