Jemele Hill says we cannot blame WNBA star A’ja Wilson for charging at a fan Tuesday night because of what other “men” have done at league games.
For background, Wilson received a technical foul during Game 2 of the Aces’ first-round playoff series against the Indiana Fever after confronting a courtside fan. According to reports, the male fan pointed at Wilson and told her she had committed a foul on Sophie Cunningham.
Teammates restrained Wilson as arena security intervened. After reviewing the incident, the Fever determined the fan had not violated the arena’s code of conduct and allowed him to return to his seat.

Wilson defended her actions after the game.

“I don’t really get into the bulls—. I try to play my game. But if I’m just walking and I just got the foul, I’m chilling. If I see a man coming at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me. I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said, the tone. That is unacceptable,” Wilson said.
“You don’t step towards me. You should never step and point at me. I’m not for that s— … that there is unacceptable. They said he didn’t do anything and that’s fine. … There’s certain things I’m not going to allow because it’s unacceptable. You don’t know me at all to step toward me and say anything.”
Wilson’s behavior was unprofessional. Imagine a star athlete charging at a fan for acting like, well, a fan.

You would never see Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James, Shohei Ohtani or even Caitlin Clark react that way. Had they done so, the criticism would have been swift and nearly universal.
Instead, many of the usual suspects have downplayed Wilson’s behavior or defended it outright. Here’s what Jemele Hill wrote on Threads:
“While A’ja could have handled it better and I’m sure it was partially fueled by the frustration losing, let’s look at the broader context: The W has had to deal with men showing up dressed as women to mock them. Men throwing dildos on the court creating an unsafe environment. Can’t blame the players for being on high alert,” Hill posted.
Apparently, losing the game and previous incidents involving other fans are enough to excuse charging at someone who, by the league’s own determination, did not violate the rules.

Hill’s broader argument is also remarkably weak. Excusing Wilson’s conduct because of what other “men” have done at other games effectively holds one fan responsible for the actions of unrelated people.
By that logic, no player could ever be expected to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable fan behavior.
Once again, this reflects a recurring problem in the WNBA. Many of the league’s biggest stars want the benefits that come with greater fame and visibility but struggle with the scrutiny and interaction that accompany it.
Wilson’s supporters have long argued she should be marketed as the face of the league. Her play certainly warrants that conversation. Her composure in moments like this does not.

Hill’s response is unsurprising. She doesn’t care what Wilson and the fan did. A’ja Wilson is a Black woman in the WNBA. That is enough for Hill to defend her no matter what.
Rather than evaluating the specific incident on its own merits, she shifts the discussion elsewhere to justify Wilson’s actions.

If Caitlin Clark or Sophie Cunningham had charged toward a Black fan under similar circumstances, it is difficult to imagine Hill responding with the same level of understanding.
The WNBA, its players, and its media once again failed to meet the moment.
